Grand Slam For Youth Baseball Dedicates 2010 Field Makeovers To Fields Damaged by Hurricane Ike
Two Galveston Little League Fields to be Refurbished with Three Other IKE-affected Little Leagues to receive monetary grants

Two Galveston area youth baseball fields that sustained damage last fall from Hurricane IKE will be refurbished through Grand Slam for Youth Baseball (GSFYB), part of a four-tiered community outreach program created by Minute Maid and the Houston Astros. The two award winners are Columbo Field, 2616 55th Street, and Buccaneer Field, 8200 Jones Drive on Galveston Island. Based on the widespread damage the state incurred from Hurricane IKE, GSFYB decided to help as many fields as possible recover from the damage and help little leagues continue to focus on their players and the game of baseball in a safe environment.

Island Little League’s Columbo Field will receive field turf reconditioning and repairs, infield reconditioning, a dugout-to-dugout warning track, re-worked batting cages and a new electronic scoreboard. Galveston West-Isle Little League’s Buccaneer Field will receive the same plus the replacement of the on-field concrete walkway with warning track material.

In addition, GSFYB will donate a professional reel mower to the City of Galveston Parks and Recreation to help the city with upkeep on both fields.

Three more little leagues will also receive help from GSFYB through a one-time grant: Nacogdoches Youth Baseball Association, Lumberton Little League and Chambers County Youth Baseball Association in Winnie, TX. This money will help to repay those leagues’ IKE-related repairs.
